Things to see and do in Winchester
The key attraction of the city is Winchester Cathedral which is open everyday. It goes back to the late 11th century in Norman times. The Winchester Bible is contained here which is known to have the longest Gothic nave in the world. The Cathedral was originally built on floating rafts and remained so for 800 years until a foundation was finally built underwater by the Winchester Diver. Regular recitals and concerts are held here as well as a summer series of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The cathedral is also where the famous Jane Austen was buried after her death in 1817.
Visit the Dean Garnier Garden from which you can get some great views of the cathedral. The stonework here is quite impressive and reflects how the builders of medieval times suffered from problems with subsidence.
A trip to the city centre is essential as it is maintained in its old ways with medieval buildings and narrow streets. The Pentice and Butter Cross are both renowned parts of the area which go back many centuries.
Also make a trip to the Winchester Great Hall which is the only part of the Winchester Castle that remains today. It was built by Henry III in the 13th century. The famous Arthur’s Round Table is also set up here which causes quite a bit of excitement among those visiting.
Flowing through central Winchester is the River Itchen which is beautiful in its appearance and the quality of its water is immense.
Explore Winchester City Mill which is now in full working order. There is a walkway that leads around the working areas almost at river level. There is also a National Trust shop here as well as a youth hostel.
The Westgate is a medieval gateway close to the Great Hall with quite some graffiti scribbled onto its walls as well as floor mostly as it was used as a prison for debtors between the 16th and 18th century. A great collection of weights and measures is contained here as well as armour. The High Street can be viewed clearly from the rooftop viewing platform.
